On May 20, 2009 at about 6:00am, deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office
responded to the Angora Lakes Resort area, near South Lake Tahoe California. They were
requested to assist the Lake Valley Fire Department (LVFD) on an arson investigation where a
cabin had been completely destroyed by a suspicious fire.
In addition to the cabin that was burned, four other cabins were burglarized or damaged in some
way. Investigating deputies located a cellular telephone near the crime scene. The owner of the
cell phone was eventually identified and determined to be a suspect.
At about 7:23pm an arson investigator from the LVFD was completing his investigation. He
was accompanied by the homeowner of the destroyed cabin. The suspect was found near the
burned cabin and he fled the area. The arson investigator and the cabin owner followed the
suspect downhill toward the area of Seneca Pond.
Assisting officers from CHP, the USFS K-9
unit, a K-9 unit from SLTPD and additional deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office
responded to the Seneca Pond area to establish a perimeter. After about one hour of searching on
foot, with assistance from the CHP helicopter, the suspect was located and safely taken into
custody.
The suspect, Peter Benjamin Manista, 31 years of age, a transient from South Lake Tahoe was
booked at the El Dorado County Jail for arson, burglary, vandalism and obstructing an officer.
